Union Berlin secured their promotion to the Bundesliga with a 2-1 victory over 1. FC Köln in Germany's top flight on Sunday.

The match at Berlin's Olympiastadion saw Union take the lead through goals from Kevin Volland and Robert Lewandowski before conceding twice in the second half as they were denied promotion by their rivals.

But Union goalkeeper Timo Weiler made a stunning save to deny Köln equaliser before Lewandowski scored the winner late on to send Union into the new season with promotion hopes still alive.

Union coach Ralf Rangnick praised his players' performance after the match, saying: "We have been working hard for this moment and we did it."

"It was a great result for us and I'm very happy that we've achieved our goal," he added.

"We knew that we had to win today and we did."

Lewandowski's two goals put him alongside Bayern Munich legend Gerd Muller as the all-time leading scorer in the Bundesliga.

He now has 44 goals in 79 appearances for Union, and is just one goal away from breaking the club's record for most goals in a single season.

"I'm so proud of my team," said Lewandowski. "I want to thank everyone who supported me and helped me achieve this goal."

"Today, we proved that we can compete with the best teams in Europe and that we have what it takes to stay in the Bundesliga."
